While Northern Bayberry may not be the 'showiest' native shrub, 80+ species of birds eat bayberry fruit including Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Tufted Titmice, Catbirds, and Eastern Bluebirds!

Northern Bayberry is a deciduous medium native shrub featuring fragrant, dark green waxy leaves and clusters of small blue-grey fruit along its branches.

PLANT DEETS:

  • Full to Part Sun

  • grows 4-8' round shrub perfect for hedges, borders or screens.

  • Zones 3- 7; native range Ontario to North Carolina

  • Average to sandy soils; well draining

  • Once established tolerates dry & poor soils; appreciates a bit of mulch ie leaves or compost at drip line to conserve moisture during the heat of Summer

  • Northern Bayberry is dioecious, needing male and female plants to produce fruits.

.A slow grower up to 8' tall, it's often found in the wild with Rosa Carolina (Carolina Rose), Spiraea alba (White Meadowsweet) or Viburnum trilobum (American Cranberry) as companions

** Host plant of the Columbia silkmoth (Hyalophora columbia) and provides nesting materials for native bees including the leafcutter bee.
